Feldenkrais Method Workshops

Nuovo Ingresso di Careggi, Largo Brambilla, 3 - 50134 – Florence

Fondazione Ferragamo and Salvatore Ferragamo SpA celebrate the Careggi Hospital’s hundredth anniversary.

To commemorate the Florentine Careggi Hospital, which celebrated its hundredth anniversary on 5 July, Fondazione Ferragamo and Salvatore Ferragamo SpA, with the participation of Museo Salvatore Ferragamo, have organised two workshops inspired by the Equilibrium exhibition at Museo Salvatore Ferragamo until 12 April 2015.

Workshops on the Feldenkrais method, a somatic discipline based on movement that focuses on interaction between the body and space, will be held on 13 September 2014 at the New Entrance to the Careggi Hospital.

The workshops will be taught by renowned dance historian Dr. Emanuele Enria, who also provided a significant contribution to the project surrounding the Equilibrium exhibition, in which dance, along with other disciplines, is explored in depth.

• 11:00 am – Workshop for children aged 7 to 13 (max 35 participants);
• 4:00 pm – Workshop for adults aged 14 and up (max 35 participants).

For information and to register: info@fondazioneferragamo.it

Both workshops are offered free of charge and will last approximately 90 minutes.
Please wear comfortable clothing and thick socks.

Feldenkrais Method Workshops

The inspiration for the Equilibrium project lies in Salvatore Ferragamo’s studies of foot anatomy and the findings of respected palaeontologist André Leroi Gourhan, who wrote “Human history begins with feet”. Helping people walk in comfortable shoes and feel happy was Salvatore Ferragamo’s greatest concern. But how could he do this? How could he support the weight of the human body in motion while locking feet inside a pair of shoes, removed from their natural state, as man was made to walk barefoot? We find Salvatore Ferragamo’s answer to these questions in his autobiography and in the Equilibrium exhibition, which compares invaluable, meaningful works of art in many different media (painting, sculpture, photography, video, film and print) that deal with walking, dancing, crossing a tightrope and marching, as well as meandering or scaling mountains in search of oneself.

This is the context for the workshops on the Feldenkrais method, a practice that focuses on gaining awareness through motion and motor skills and, therefore, through movement, to help increase awareness of oneself in space. The method is ideal for both adults and children.

Secret Garden

At 10:30 am, a shoemaking workshop will be held for children aged 5 to 11. Taught by a master shoemaker, children will learn the differences between hides and the main steps in the crafting of a woman’s shoe. Then they will put their creativity to the test by assembling and decorating their very own sandal.
At 4:30 pm, a workshop on the creation of bags will be held for children aged 8 to 13. An expert will demonstrate the main steps in the construction of a bag and invite the children to assemble and decorate a small prototype using their imagination, in keeping with Salvatore Ferragamo’s passion for experimenting with innovative materials.
