Hanayo and Tenko Nakajima
On the street art lined avenues of Brooklyn
At the very heart of Hanayo Nakajima’s art is one of her most frequent and beloved subjects, her daughter Tenko. Trained as a junior geisha, Hanayo has explored the juxtaposition of Japanese tradition against the provocative nature of her art, fueled by her ties through Tenko to Germany and the Berlin’s Kreuzberg art scene. As Tenko has grown as a subject and a source of inspiration for her mother’s ever evolving work, she too has grown as an artist and dancer drawing inspiration from the many facets of her mother’s experience and knowledge of the underground Japanese culture. As with everything they do, the international duo’s spontaneous performance in Brooklyn paid homage to their roots with a nod to Hanayo’s sojourn to New York’s mecca of street art.
